In the Community Gallery, Nelson-based photographer Susan Faye offers In My Dreams, a deeply personal reflection on nature, memory, and perception. Raised on the prairies and long settled in the West Kootenays, Faye captures both the grandeur and subtleties of the natural world through emotive landscapes, intentional camera movement (ICM), and in-camera multiple exposures. Her images—printed on canvas—evoke a painterly, dreamlike quality that speaks to a lifelong journey of observation, learning, and visual storytelling.
From the Artist:
“Images surround us constantly in our day to day lives. We can walk past them without a glance or choose to see something that strikes a chord with our senses. I have chosen photography as a medium to express my view of the world because it allows me to record what I see around me on any given day. Sometimes that entails detail and sometimes the larger view but always reflects my own perspective. I tend not to stick to a particular genre because the range of images is too varied to limit the possibilities. Through photographing I have learned how to see the world around me, whether it be the mundane or the miraculous. The instant the shutter is snapped can be influenced by the situation : time, place, light …. It can be impulsive or it can be a very determined choice. I notice pattern and design be it natural or manmade. I tend to work from emotion and response to particular circumstances and am always striving to communicate what I see. Often this is the essence of a subject and not necessarily how it appears realistically. Images vibrate around us constantly and I strive to turn a fresh eye on everyday scenes that may otherwise go unnoticed. This now includes in camera multiple exposures and intentional camera movement. These both broaden my vision and possibilities. My journey has been from black and white film to digitally created images. There was a gap of decades when life had other plans for me, but when I once again had the time to devote to photography I found it had become something entirely different than what I had known. This has been a huge learning curve since I tend to be technologically challenged. But I am persistent and I now enjoy seeing these images printed on canvas. This printing surface tends to bring a painterly and sometimes impressionistic effect. This is a far leap from the Black & White film images I started with, but as with life, photography is a process. I am a life long learner and I hope that some of my passion and love of images is reflected to the viewer.”Â
