We believe in:
At The Langham, we are dedicated to enriching our community by fostering arts, culture, and heritage. From captivating performances to thought-provoking exhibitions and historical preservation, our offerings provide opportunities for creativity, connection, and reflection. Here’s a glimpse into what we do to inspire and engage our community.
Founded in 1975, The Langham Cultural Society was established to rescue and restore the historic Langham building. Originally built in 1896 as a hotel during the silver mining boom, the Langham has served many roles, including as an internment centre for Japanese Canadians during WWII.
In 1974, a visionary group of Kaslo residents, recognizing the building’s potential, saved it from demolition and began its restoration. Their efforts transformed the dilapidated structure into a thriving cultural centre, preserving its rich heritage while creating a space for artistic and community expression.
Over the decades, The Langham has earned recognition for its contributions to heritage conservation and the arts. Awards include the Heritage Canada National Prize and the Honouring the Arts award from the BC Arts Councils. The building itself, now designated as a Provincial Heritage Site, remains a testament to the resilience and creativity of the Kaslo community.
Today, The Langham stands as a cornerstone of cultural life in Kaslo and the wider West Kootenay region, continuing to honor its historical roots while embracing the future of the arts.
For nearly 140 years, The Langham has stood as a Kaslo landmark, its story carefully preserved by historians and the community. Explore our past here.
