Wendy Toogood & Don Mabie (AKA Chuck Stake)

MOSTLY (but not completely) SMALLER WORKS

Exhibit: October 11 – December 6, 2024

MOSTLY (but not completely) SMALLER WORKS, brings together the works of Wendy Toogood & Don Mabie (AKA Chuck Stake).

Deeply rooted in drawing, Wendy Toogood documents her daily experiences through intuitive sketches, often merging rough line drawings with detailed embroidery and appliqué on canvas. Each work encapsulates personal themes, from gardening and family activities to news stories and thrift shop finds, reflecting the essence of her everyday life. Working with limited materials in her Nakusp studio has fostered a compact, portable aesthetic, allowing her to celebrate the significance of ordinary moments through her art.

Since 1969, Don Mabie (AKA Chuck Stake) has engaged deeply with the interplay of aesthetics and consciousness, striving to awaken viewers from their habitual states of mind. While initially incorporating words into his drawings, he has progressively explored “non-objective” art, often obscuring text to highlight the purity of form and encouraging experimentation with line, shape, and color. The exhibition also features his rubber stamp artworks and sticker collages, which have been integral to his artistic practice since the early 1970s. Mabie’s work is characterized by meticulous detail and a physical engagement with the drawing process itself. This collection reflects his evolution as an artist and his commitment to stimulating consciousness within the viewer, inviting them to reconsider their own perceptions.

Megan Bond— Mindscapes

Exhibit: October 11 – December 6, 2024

Megan Bond’s artistic practice delves into her exploration of meditation through the use of acrylic and mirror. In her latest series, she revisits the transformative experience of meditation by depicting intricate, web-like networks that intentionally avoid blue tones to challenge the perception of “just water.” These contrasting colors are presented as diptychs, embodying the concept of color negatives, which parallels the meditative process of focusing on an object. When the eyes close, an inversion occurs, transforming light into darkness and vice versa, while lingering negative images heighten the sense of reorientation as one returns to their surroundings. Inspired by the interplay of light refracting through water on the ocean floor, Bond’s structures reflect the fractured reality of inward exploration during meditation. The artworks convey an organized chaos of light, reminiscent of thoughts drifting through the mind, capturing the ephemeral nature of clarity and awareness that arises from stillness and the rhythmic ebb and flow of breath.
